The Martha was hauled out on January 3rd 2012 for her Ballast Keel Replacement Project.
The remaining phase of the restoration requires the scheduling and organizing of a number of specialized traditional skills that include shipwrights, sail makers, riggers, and the services of a foundry skilled in marine casting and fabrications. All these skills will be resourced locally in Port Townsend.
Design work and drawings of specifications had begun, based on preliminary criteria in July 2011. The sourcing of critical materials and negotiations for its acquisition were completed in October 2011 and Martha will be hauled at Port Townsend Boat Haven by January3rd.
Mast building, fabrication of rig and specialized hardware would be underway at the same time as keel removal. The fitting of the re-engineered ballast keel would be completed by March, 2012. The stepping of the mast and related rigging as well as remaining related work would be completed during the month of April with commissioning and sea trials scheduled for May 2012.
