Education Under Sail

Martha's sail-training program is unique in many ways. First off she only carries 6 students. On a vessel of Martha's size you are involved in all the workings of the ship. You will rise to the morning listening to the VHF radio weather report to help decide the destination for the day. Our program will show you what it is like to live and work on board a vessel. Meals are served family style around the large main saloon mahogany table.

Martha is the type of vessel that requires the focus of a good reliable crew. Martha was built as a gentleman’s racing yacht and she is still competitive. In her current program we look for crew who want to experience a life of adventure and learning. Here, teamwork is a requirement, passion and leadership a must.

Our program is geared towards those who want to experience the finesse of making a classic racing yacht perform to her highest ability. We hold each student to a high standard and they proudly rise to that standard. You will be expected to conduct yourself as a professional mariner.

Sailing on a 1907 built wooden schooner is not only a privledge, but a fun and exciting learning experience. Those who have sailed on board have had some of the best sailing times of their life.

There is no experience necessary. You will be taught seamanship. You will learn navigation and sail theory. You will learn not only the importance of taking care of the vessel but also taking care of each other as you learn to work together as crew. You will learn how to raise and lower sail. You will learn how to set an anchor in a safe refuge each evening and raise it in the morning to head off for another unknown adventure.

Cost includes three meals each day (plus snacks), and hands on training. Each trainee receives a crew shirt, and also material to complete a ditty bag. Fees do not include transportation to or from the vessel.
